8 Quick Home Tips for Fall & Winter

I’m always looking for preventative tips and tricks to maintain things around the house and save myself extra work and a little money in the long run. I came across a list with some great tips the other day - here is a quick summary!

  1. Get your furnace professionally serviced - Make sure it’s clean - you’re breathing the air, and if you can upgrade to a programmable thermostat, you can run it more efficiently and save money in the long run.

  2. Check windows and doors for leaks. Stop heat loss by checking weather stripping and caulking were needed. Again it will help save a few bucks.

  3. Sweep the chimney. (If you have one) Stop smoke inhalation and prevent fires by getting your chimney cleaned.

  4. Clean out your gutters. Clear your gutters so they don’t cause any serious water damage.

  5. Inspect the roof. Fix any damage, check caulking and flashings around the chimney and air vents.

  6. Turn off outside water. Drain excess water from hoses and pipes that can burst when water freezes.

  7. Trim bushes and trees. In particular around power lines - snowy branches can cause power outages. Don’t do this maintenance yourself - talk to a professional.

  8. Pad exposed pipes in unheated areas. Pipes in the basement, attic or crawl space are some examples of pipes you may want to cover so they don’t burst.
