This Sunday, we are mixing up the ultimate match-day survival drink: a classic Michelada. It is savory, tangy, highly refreshing, and built right in your glass.
In fact, out of all the Happy Hour recipes we have shared, this has officially become my most requested drink when I am entertaining. It turns out my friends might not actually be coming over to watch the tournament with me—they are just using me for my bartending skills. But once you taste how the lime, Worcestershire, Maggi, and Valentina hot sauce come together with a cold Mexican lager, you won't blame them one bit.
If you have never had one, the Michelada is Mexico’s legendary cerveza preparada (prepared beer). While its exact origins are a fun debate, the most popular theory lies right in the name itself.
In Mexico, "chela" is a beloved slang term for a beer. When you ask for "mi chela helada" (which translates to "my ice-cold beer"), it naturally blends together to form Michelada.
Another popular legend points to the 1960s at a sports club in San Luis Potosí, where a club member named Michel Ésper began ordering his daily pour with ice, lime, and salt. Whichever story you prefer to believe, there is no denying that this mix of crisp lager, savory umami, and bright citrus has become the ultimate global staple for backyard hangouts and Sunday brunches alike.
Here is how to craft the perfect one at home!

1 oz Fresh Lime Juice (Squeeze 1 full lime)
0.5 oz Worcestershire Sauce
0.5 oz Maggi Seasoning
Ice (Enough to fill 3/4 of your glass)
1 Cold Beer (A Mexican lager like Corona, Pacifico, Dos Equis (XX), or Modelo works best)
Clamato Juice (Optional, to top off the glass)
Bonus: 5 dabs of Valentina hot sauce (Optional—add this if you like it spicy!)
Preparation
Prep your glass: Grab your favorite pint or beer glass and fill it exactly 3/4 of the way with ice.
Pro-Tip: If you want to take it to the next level, rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip it in Tajín seasoning or coarse salt before adding your ice!
Add the savory base: Squeeze your full lime directly into the glass (yielding about 1 oz of fresh juice). Next comes my secret weapon: shake both the Worcestershire and the Maggi seasoning into the glass for a heavy, vigorous 7-count. Yes, a full 7 seconds of shaking! It's a lot of seasoning, but that heavy hand is what gives this drink its legendary, crave-worthy punch.
Bring the heat (Optional): If you are opting for a spicy kick, add your 5 dabs of Valentina hot sauce right over the ice.
The pour: Slowly pour your choice of cold Mexican lager (like Corona, Pacifico, XX, or Modelo) into the glass.
Top it off: If you prefer a traditional red Michelada, top off the remaining space in the glass with a splash of Clamato juice.
Stir and serve: Grab your bar spoon and give the whole glass a thorough stir, pulling the rich seasonings up from the bottom so every single sip is perfectly balanced.
