The St-Rita: A Floral Twist on the May Margarita

With May finally here and Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, there is no better time to talk about Margaritas. Whether you’re hosting a weekend BBQ or winding down after a day of home tours, a great Margarita is the ultimate crowd-pleaser.

This month, we’re leveling up the standard recipe. By swapping out the traditional orange liqueur for Elderflower, we trade the heavy citrus notes for a delicate floral profile that perfectly matches the spring blooms across the city. We’re sticking to my favorite easy-to-remember ratios, with one small secret to keep it crisp and refreshing.

A pineapple and elderflower margarita in a Tajín-rimmed rocks glass on a wooden picnic table, with a list of ingredients: Tequila, Fresh Limes, Elderflower Liqueur, Pineapple Juice, Soda Water, and Tajín

St-Rita

Shopping List

  • 1.5 oz Silver Tequila

  • 1 oz Elderflower Liqueur (St-Germain / Bols makes a more affordable version.)

  • 1.5 oz Pineapple Juice (about a splash to save you measuring)

  • 1/2 Lime (Freshly squeezed) (1/2 a lime is about 0.5oz)

  • The Finisher: A "Heavy Splash" of Soda Water

  • The Rim: Tajín or Sea Salt

Preparation

  1. The Rim: Rub a lime wedge around the edge of a 10-12 oz rocks glass and dip it into Tajín or salt. Fill the glass to the top with fresh ice.

  2. The Build: Pour your Tequila, Elderflower liqueur, and pineapple juice directly over the ice.

  3. The Squeeze: Squeeze in the juice of half a lime (Get a squeezer if you don’t have one.)

  4. The Stir: Give it a quick, gentle stir with a spoon to combine the flavors.

  5. The Top: Finish with a heavy splash of soda water. Just enough to add a little sparkle and cut the sweetness without drowning the spirit.

Pro Tip

  • If you’re not using heavy syrups and the drink is on the rocks, unless you’re trying to look cool - you don’t need to shake it. This keeps the prep easy and the focus where it should be - on your guests! The key is that 10-12 oz glass - it keeps the drink tight, cold, and professional without looking like a pint of juice.
