It’s Easy Being Green: The Tokyo Tea

With March just around the corner and St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, the temptation to reach for a heavy green beer is real. But if last month’s Cosmopolitan taught us anything, it’s that a well-crafted cocktail always steals the show.

This month, we’re leaning into the spirit of the season with a drink that is as electric to look at as it is refreshing to sip: The Tokyo Tea.

A Modern Glow-Up

The Tokyo Tea often gets a reputation for being a "party drink," but when made with high-quality spirits and fresh citrus, it transforms into a sophisticated, vibrant cooler. Think of it as the refined, melon-forward cousin of the Long Island Iced Tea.

By ditching the bottled sour mix in favor of freshly squeezed lime juice, we cut through the sweetness of the melon liqueur to create a balanced, crisp profile that’s perfect for a spring happy hour.

Shopping List

  • Vodka (0.5 oz)

  • Gin (0.5 oz)

  • White Rum (0.5 oz)

  • Silver Tequila (0.5 oz)

  • Triple Sec (0.5 oz)

  • Midori / Melon Liqueur (0.5 oz)

  • Fresh Limes (for 0.75 oz of juice)

  • Simple Syrup (0.25 oz)

  • Lemon-Lime Soda (Sprite or 7-Up to top)

  • Garnish: Lemon wheels and maraschino cherries

Preparation

  1. Prep the Citrus: Squeeze your limes fresh. (Pro-tip: doing this an hour before serving allows the juice to aerate for peak flavor).

  2. Combine: Add the Vodka, Gin, Rum, Tequila, Triple Sec, and Midori into a cocktail shaker.

  3. Balance: Pour in 0.75 oz of fresh lime juice and 0.25 oz of simple syrup.

  4. The Shake: Fill the shaker with plenty of ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds until the tin is frosty.

  5. The Pour: Strain the mixture into a tall highball glass filled with fresh ice.

  6. The Finish: Top with a splash of lemon-lime soda, stir gently, and garnish with a lemon wheel and a cherry.

Pro Tip

  • Hosting Tip: This is a high-ABV cocktail, so presentation is key. Use clear glassware and large ice cubes to keep the drink from diluting too quickly while you entertain.

  • REAL Lime Juice: ALWAYS use real lime juice.

  • Get a stainless steel lemon and lime squeezer: Most drinks you’ll make take 0.5 oz of lime Juice. How much is that? Every lime will produce approximately 1 oz of lime juice (that means squeeze half a lime into your mix).

  • Ice Matters: Use fresh ice. Old ice will change the flavour.
